Protect, restore water related ecosystems from pollution, Minister beckons

The Minister of Environment, Mohammed Mahmoud, has called on Nigerians to protect and restore water related ecosystems, including mountains, forest, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes. 

He made this call during the National stakeholders forum organised by National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA) on Wednesday in Abuja.  

The forum had as its theme ” Water Pollution: Innovative Solutions for Environmental Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement.  

Mahmoud stated that to create an occasion for productive deliberation on the importance of curbing the menace associated with water pollution, to provide a unique opportunity for stakeholders to proffer some innovative solutions to the problem with a view to averting an impending epidemic.

“All our water bodies including surface water, marine waters and groundwater are impacted, affected by various levels of intolerable pollution,” he stressed.

He noted that the nature and amount of pollutants in fresh water determines the suitability of water for many human uses such as drinking, bathing and agriculture.

In his welcome address, Director General of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA), Prof.Aliyu Jauro, said the major environmental issues, is the water borne diseases which are recognized as reasons for the many health challenges that stare us in the face.
