PSC approves 3 DIGs, suspends 8 CPs, 11 DCPs’ promotion

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of three Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) to the rank of Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs).

The commission has also suspended the promotion of eight Commissioners of Police (CPs) to the rank of AIGs and 11 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to the next rank of CP due to their failure to appear for the mandatory promotion interview.

PSC Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, in a press statement, Sunday in Abuja, said the new DIGs are expected to fill the vacant duty posts created due to the retirements of three DIGs representing the North-central, North-east and North-west geopolitical zones.

He said the approval of the appointments of the new DIGs also ensured that the defined succession policy in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is sustained.

The spokesperson said AIG Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa, the Force Secretary, would be replacing DIG Mustapha Dan- Daura, who retired on January 15, 2023, for the North-west slot; AIG Aji Ali Janga from North-east would replace DIG Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim, who retired on November 26, 2022; while AIG Adeleke Adeyinka Bode of North-central would replace DIG Sanusi Lemu, who retired on January 31, 2023.

He said the appointments were part of the decisions of the reconvened 18th Plenary Meeting of the Commission in Abuja on February 2 and 3, and chaired by PSC acting Chairman, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi (retd).

On the suspended promotions he said: “The commission had sent invitations to the officers to appear before it for the usual interaction to ascertain their suitability and capability for the new offices.

“The Commission expressed surprise on their failure to honour the invitation especially as the 2023 general elections are just days away.”

Ani further disclosed that, “The commission approved the promotion of 10 Assistant Commissioners of Police  (ACPs) to the next rank of DCP; 17 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) to Assistant Commissioners (ACPs) and 301 Superintendents of Police (SPs) to CSP.

According to him, 47  skipped Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) from previous recommendations to the commission were also promoted to SPs; while 665 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) were promoted to DSPs.

Similarly, the recommendations for ACP Nwamanna Nelson, SP Iliyas Casmir, and SP Alheri Mamman, were also endorsed and the officers promoted to their next ranks after they were absolved of any Pending Disciplinary Matter (PDM).

He said Justice Ogunbiyi charged the newly promoted officers to give their best to the service of their nation especially now that Nigeria would be going to the polls to elect new leaders.

She congratulated and wished the officers success in their new ranks.
