PSC Chair to Police: We must work together to solve security challenges

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), IGP Alhaji Musiliu Smith (retd.), has tasked the acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba Alkali, and the new Police management theme on synergy.

Smith stated this while playing host to IGP Baba and the Police management team, Wednesday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

PSC Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, in a press statement in Abuja, said Smith called for a harmonious and productive working relationship between the two government agencies in the interest of the nation.

He said the commission’s boss noted that the two agencies needed each other and must work together to solve the nation’s security challenges.

According to the spokesperson, Alhaji Smith who prayed for a successful tenure of office for the acting IGP assured him of the Commission’s guidance and support but noted that the IGP should listen and carry his management team along in the discharge of his duties.

“You should encourage and benefit from team work with your management team; let them be free to advise you; listen to them,” he told the acting IGP.

He added that members of the management team should not be afraid to advise the IGP but should also not mislead him.

“Be truthful to the IGP, give him his due respect and the Nigeria Police will make a lot of progress,” Smith stated.

Alhaji Smith disclosed that recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force would soon begin after little details relating to the exercise are properly straightened and all issues resolved in the interest of the PSC and the Force and in the greater interest of the nation.

He decried the proliferation of investigative units in the Nigeria Police Force and demanded that the acting IGP should look into it to save the Force embarrassments these units bring.

He said there must be proper and close monitoring of investigative units to stem the atrocities officials commit in the line of duty.

The PSC boss tasked the IGP on quick treatment of cases of misconduct by officers so that those found wanting are brought to book.

“It is this set of Officers that have continued to damage the image of the Force and you should quickly get these bad eggs out of the Force. You should also ensure sanity among the ranks and file and even the officers,” he further stated.

Earlier, the acting IGP said he was at the PSC to express the loyalty and cooperation of the Force to the commission.

He implored the commission to go beyond recruitment and promotion and assert its authority to make the Force better.

Baba said the Force would be happy to work with products of the commission’s recruitment, adding that the 35 Police training schools in the country should be made to be busy with all year programmes.

The police boss promised to work closely with PSC to give the nation an ideal and vibrant Police Force.
