In line with the policy of President Muhammadu Buhari to restore the glory of Nigerian agricultural produce in the World market, the federal Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development has introduced a programme on Quality Control and Standardization of Agricultural Produce in the country.
The team leader of the training programme Muhammad Bashir Abdulkadir disclosed this at a training and sensitization rally for farmers and traders on indiscriminate Used of Agro Chemicals in production, post-harvest handling and storage of Agricultural Commodities held at KNARDA and Dawanau international market respectively in Kano.
He said the aimed of the training programme is to discuss the strategy of implementing government policy of integrating the culture of Quality and global good agricultural practices in the Nigerian agricultural sector.
The training officer however said the administration of Muhammadu Buhari has recorded outstanding milestone in Nigerian agro sector through the establishment of standing committee on Zero Reject of Agricultural produce and non-oil exports in the country and the changing the mind set of farmers and extension workers on indiscriminate use of chemicals.
Also speaking, a lecturer at the Bayero University Kano, Professor Amina Mustapha of the Department of Dry Land management advised stakeholders to consider the important of good preservation of fruits, vegetables, fish and meat.
She then urged the farmers and traders to avoid the use of agro chemical to ripen fruits, preserving vegetables by spraying with chemicals, spraying chemicals in preventing flies on meats and fish, using detergent to wash vegetables and fruits as well as roasting animal skin with used of burnt rubber.
In his remarks at the rally, the traditional ruler of Dawanau market ,Alhaji Muhammad Ismail, called on federal government to provide a good storage facilities that will standardize the produce towards added value in the world market.
