Rainstorm sacks 1,000 homes in Jigawa

Heavy rainfall which lasted for almost 12 hours has rendered homeless over 1,000 families in two local government areas in Jigawa state; Ringim and Taura.

Our correspondent who was at the scene reports that hundreds of houses were demolished and the victims had taken refuge in schools while others were being accommodated by relations and Good Samaritans.
Assessing the damage in the affected local governments, the state deputy governor, Alhaji Ahmed Mahmoud, expressed government’s sympathy over the calamity and assured the victims of prompt government’s assistance.
He then directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to, as a matter of urgency, assess those affected by the flood “so as to enable them receive government’s assistance.”
Some of the victims taking refuge in government schools and buildings appealed to SEMA and NEMA to come to their aid.

The deputy governor also visited the Emir of Ringim, Alhaji Sayyadi Abubakar Mahmoud, at his palace and sympathised with him over the incident.
In a related development, the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar Maje, who is the chairman of Jigawa state Council of Chiefs, has cautioned his subjects against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages to avert flooding.
He stated this yesterday when he received in his palace the deputy governor who was on an inspection tour of places submerged by water in the area.
