A devastating rainstorm on Sunday left the University of Benin Senate chamber and library roofs in ruins.
Other buildings affected by the rainstorm included a 1,000 Centre for Entrepreneur Development, 1,000 lecture theatre in the Faculty of Physical Science, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, E-Library, Faculty of Arts Lecture Theatre and the university’s staff quarters.
Blueprint also observed that trees which served as windbreakers and a telecommunication mask were damaged by the ravaging rainstorm.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Faraday Orunmwense, who inspected the level of damage yesterday, said the havoc wrecked on the buildings was devastating, adding that urgent attention was needed to put them back in shape to enable students continue their learning in a conducive environment.
Orunmwense called on the federal and state governments to render financial assistance to the institution to enable it fix up its damaged buildings.
According to him, “It is just unfortunate that the damage done is so enormous and I said, l should come down to assess the damage done to the buildings on campus.
“The effect is so much and we need the help of both states and the federal government.
The VC described the incident as unfortunate, said efforts were being intensified to plant more trees on the campus in order to serve as windbreakers to prevent future occurrence.
A senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Dr. (Mrs.) Omomhenle, expressed satisfaction that the Vice Chancellor embarked on the assessment, which according to her, would enable him know the extent of damage done on the buildings and what the students and lecturers were going through.
