Following the bye election conducted into the seats of the House of Representatives at Doguwa/Tudunwada and Kiru/ Bebeji constituencies in Kano last Saturday, the former majority leader, Alhaji Alasan Ado Doguwa, has won a landslide victory at the polls.
Also, Alhaji Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa, lost his seat to his rival, Alhaji Ali Datti Yako of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Announcing the result of the polls for Doguwa/ Tudunwada Federal Constituency Saturday night, the returning officer, Professor Abdullahi Arabi said, Doguwa scored 66,667 votes, defeating his rival in the polls, Alhaji Yushau Mohammed, who scored6,322 , while Alhaji Ali Datti Yako scored 48,641 votes to defeat his opponent, Alhaji Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa, who scored 13,507 votes.
Similar elections were also conducted in Minjibir, Madobi, Kunbotso, Rogo Bunkure and other local government areas in the state with almost all the incumbents retaining their seats, except in few cases where minor changes were effected at the polls.
Speaking to news men hours to the announcement of the result, the former house majority leader said he considered the verdict of the Appeal Court against his victory as a litmus test that had exposed him to the nitty- gritty of the legal battle which had gingered his resolve to repose an unfettered confidence in the judiciary as an important arm of the government.”
He said: “As far as I am concerned, I am popularly revered and totally accepted by the people of my constituency since the advent of the present democratic dispensation . my victory at the polls was simply annulled on the premise that the names of two of my opponents were either by act of commission or commission skipped on the result sheet.
“Remember, we are saddled with the constitutional power of making laws. The decision of the Appeal Court to me, was a litmus test to me knowing my reverence and acceptability in the eyes of my people, I was pretty confident that there is no way I can lose the election.”
