Recognise Ogidi Day cultural festival, FG urged

President of Ogidi Development Union, Eniolorunda Ralph, has appealed to the federal government to include Ogidi day cultural festival on its annual tourism calendar.
Ralph, who made the appeal on Saturday during the seventh Ogidi day celebration in Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, solicited the support of government towards ensuring that the festival is re-packaged to attract foreign participation.
According to him, “It is the only cultural festival celebrated in the month of June throughout Nigeria.
It is our own new yam festival which is likened to human regeneration.
It’s a celebration of life.” He noted that the advancement of any society will remain a mirage if well considered development programmes are not infused into the agenda of the society’s socio-cultural system.
He further revealed that the N250 million endowment fund was aimed at completing the ongoing projects in the community and the commencement of the new ones.
“Because we are aware of the current state of our economy as a nation, we will not switch for the government before taking the bull by the horns by ourselves.
Very soon our cottage hospital will come up with a robust partnership with St John Catholic Hospital for the use of our town and other neighbouring communities,” he added.
In his speech, chairman of the occasion, Chief Tunde Thani, described Ogidi day as a cultural festival that had witnessed tremendous transformation and called on individual and corporate organisations to support the fund raising.
Also in his speech, the father of the day, Chief Abiodun Ehindero, said the Ogidi day was built round new yam which he noted has been existing for long.
