Religion, culture should conform with policy on gender education – Zamfara monarch

The federal and state governments have been called upon to ensure that the national policy on gender in education (NPGE) is in conformity with religion and culture of the northern part of the country.

The Emir of Kaura Namoda, Alhaji Sanusi Muhammad Asha of Zamfara state, made the call at a two-day state level meeting to domesticate national policy on gender in education NPGE.

The meeting was organised by Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) in partnership with UNICEF, held at Zamfara Teachers Training Center, Gusau Wednesday.

He said for the domestication of NPGE program to succeed in the region, there is need to involve all traditional leaders, religious and civil society organisations in the implementation of the program in their respective states.

He suggested that Zamfara state as a Shari’a state where Islam is the major religion, there is need for government to separate girls and boys in schools and mandate wearing of Hijab among girls as enshrined in the Holy Qur’an and teaching of Prophet Muhammad.

“By enforcing wearing of Hijab among girls while in school in the state, it would serve as a yardstick for boosting morale among our younger generation,” Emir Sanusi said.

Alhaji Asha also urged Zamfara state government to provide adequate teaching aids in schools for the development of teaching and learning process in the state.

The monarch tasked parents and guardians to always remain committed in ensuring effective supervision and monitoring of their children in school, particularly girls for better future generations.
