Reps demand ban on alcohol, others for policemen on duty

Worried by Sunday’s incident of a policeman shooting dead a young woman, Mrs Bolanle Raheem in Lagos, the House of Representatives has asked for the banning of alcohol and other intoxicating substances for police personnel on duty as a guard against unruly behaviour.

While calling for an immediate investigation to be carried out to get justice for the latest victim, and the reported earlier incident involving a young man, Kafaru Buraimoh who was also gunned down by a policemen in the area, the House said there should a zero-tolerance policy to all misbehaviour in Nigeria Police Act.

The resolution was arrived at on Wednesday following a motion by Babajide Obanikoro, who recalled that on Sunday December 25th, 2022, Mrs Raheem and her family were returning from church when they were pulled over in Ajah area by officers of the Nigeria police; without any altercation, one of the officers, ASP Drambi Vandi aimed at and pulled his trigger killing Mrs Raheem on the spot.

The woman according to him was said to be seven months pregnant with twins.

“Concerned that the same incident happened earlier in the month, 7th of December, by officers of the same Ajiwe police station, gunned down a young man by the name Kafaru Buraimoh which sparked a bit of civic unrest”, the lawmaker stated and prayed the House to adopt the motion as matter of urgent public importance.

“This type of occurrence happens often across Nigeria and that the officers usually get away with shooting and killing same innocent citizens they swore to protect”, he lamented.
