Reps hold valedictory session for departed deputy leader, others

By Joshua Egbodo House of Representatives yesterday held a special valedictory session in honour of its late Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Buba Jibril, during which glowing tributes were paid to the deceased, as well as late Senator Bukar Mustapha, who also died recently. Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, in a brief chat with journalists, just after the long session and signing of condolence registers of the departed lawmakers, lamented the spate of deaths of members of the 8th Assembly, noting that “it has never been like this in the legislative history of Nigeria.” The Speaker, while fielding questions on the suggested creation of a trust fund to cater for needs of the immediate families of members after death, agreed that the House would put that into consideration.
Earlier during the session, Dogara described the late Jibril as “a politician who defied all odds” by contesting elections on different political parties’ platforms, based on his belief, and repeatedly got elected to represent his people, and also courageously stood his grounds by holding “on to the truth” on the outcome of the 2015 controversial gubernatorial election in Kogi state. Also paying tributes to the deceased lawmaker, Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Yussuff Lasun, said “it time for us to reflect on our lives” as he prayed for the repose of his soul, and the family’s fortitude to bear the sad loss. Several other members separately paid glowing tributes to the lawmaker, Senator Bukar and former member of the House, Independence Ogunewe during the special session.
