Reps reject FG’s 95,000 farmers figure for Kebbi State

Some members of the House of Representatives from Kebbi State have rejected the 95,000 figure allotted the state as the number of registered farmers by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

The said enumeration was done in preparation for the distribution of federal government subsidised fertilisers.

Led by Chairman House Committee on Air Force, Hon. Shehu Koko, the lawmakers called on the Minister of Agriculture Alh Sabo Nanono to come clean on farmers registration in Kebbi State, noting that farmers in the state were in the region one million.

Speaking on the development on Thursday in Abuja, the lawmakers said that the Minister should come and tell the Kebbi people how he came up with 95,000 as the number of farmers in Kebbi, adding that the Minister and his officials shouldn’t have come up with a figure of 95,000.

“In Kebbi state, there are over one million (1,000000) farmers as opposed to the 95,000 being bandied as the total figure of all registered farmers in the state”, he stated.

According to him, it appeared there was  is a ploy to scheme out the state from the federal government subsidy on fertilizer for local farmers, which the state is most qualified

“As the representatives of the people in parliament, we would want to ensure that the people of Kebbi benefit from the fertilizer subsidy scheme by government”, he submitted.
