Reps summon contractor, FG officials over Abuja-Kano road

The House of Representatives Committee on Works, has invited Messer Julius Berger, and key officials of the Federal Ministry of Works over petitions before it on the handling of rehabilitation works on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kabir Abubakar in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday explained that those expected to appear before the committee include the permanent secretary in charge of highways planning and development, and the Director in charge of highways construction.

While calling for some closed sections of the road to be opened, the lawmaker said the invitation was “as a result of the committee being inundated with complaints by well-meaning Nigerians traveling on the corridor”.

According to the lawmaker, “the ongoing rehabilitation and dualist ion of the road is causing untold hardship to motorists and other road users plying the road”, adding that the partial closure of some sections of the highway has caused enormous financial and Labour time losers due to traffic congestion.

“We call on the construction company working on the road to expedite work on the project so as to complete it in time. They should immediately open up closed sections of the road that they have completed to motorists so as to reduce the long hours spent traveling on the road.

“We are also calling on the relevant authorities such as the Federal Road Safety Commission and the Nigerian Police Force to provide adequate security and ensure that motorists drive within the maximum speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour, as prescribed by the national road traffic regulations 2012, at construction zones…”, Abubakar said in the statement.
