Reps urge IGP, others to halt Nasarawa clashes

House of Representatives has called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, as well as heads of other security agencies to urgently deploy personnel to the troubled Ebira and Bassa Communities in Toto local government area of Nassarawa state.

The call came following a motion brought under matters of urgent national importance on the need to intervene in the crisis between the two communities by the member representing Karu, Keffi and Kokona Federal Constituency of Nassarawa state, Jonathan Gbefwi. Gbefwi informed the House that the two communities had since April engaged each other in repeated clashes, resulting in loss of several lives, and hundreds forced to flee their ancestral homes. According to the lawmaker, without immediate intervention, the crisis would escalate, and compound the lingering security challenge being faced by many parts of the country. The House also in its resolution agreed to set up an Ad Hoc committee to interface with the Institute of Peace and Confl ict Resolution, and to investigate the crisis with a view to bringing lasting a solution and piece to the area.
