Reps wade in to end ASUU’s strike

The House of Representatives Monday mandated its leadership to wade into the ongoing industrial action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), with a view to bringing it to an end.

This came following a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by Hon Musa Bagos, who expressed concerns that frequent strikes by the union was becoming an embarrassment to the country.

The union had been at loggerhead with the federal government over disagreement in getting its members enrolled on the Integrated Personnel Payment Scheme (IPPS), embarking on a two-week warning strike from Monday over insistence of the federal government that the union’s members must enroll or miss their salaries.

Bagos, who lamented that a new academic session was just beginning, said “the strike if allowed to take full effect will cost a lot of students extra academic year”.

According to the lawmaker, the frequency of such strikes has encouraged education tourism of Nigerians to other countries.

Speaking in support of the motion, Hon Yunusa Ahmed however pleaded with ASUU to while fighting for their interests, also take students and their parents into consideration.

Similarly, Toby Okechukwu and Julius Ihonvbere, in their separate contributions said the federal government should take urgent steps toward bringing the strike to an end.
