Reps want varsities acceptance fees abolished

The House of Representatives has called for the immediate abolition of admission acceptance fees charged students by Nigerian universities
To this end, the House on Wednesday urged the Federal Ministry of Education, to direct universities in the country to stop such charges.

A member, Hon. Martins Chinedu, in a motion on the matter described the charges as obnoxious, and putting extra burden, praying the House to in addition mandate its committee on tertiary education and services to investigate the admission policies and practices.

He said many federal government-owned universities charge as much as N30,000 per student, while state and private institutions charge significantly more.
The lawmaker gave some of such charges and the universities involved to include University bof Ibadan; N35,000, University of Lagos; N20,000, Ahmadu Bello University; 30,000, Imo State University; N70,000 and Lagos State University; N20,000.

“Applicants are expected to pay the acceptance fees within a short deadline despite having going through the tortuous process of paying and sitting for SSCE and UTME…and if they are unable to meet the deadline, the applicants are surcharged for late payment with the risk of losing the offer of admission”, he lamented.
