Residents of Lafia express fear over influx of okada riders from other sates

About three hundred Okada riders from the North-west and part of North-eastern states have relocated to Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital.

This was disclosed by Mohammed Ahmed Kawu, chairman Motorcycle

Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN) Lafia local government, in an interview with Blueprint in Lafia.

Kawu said that in the last three months, his union has registered over 300 new members who are mostly from part of north western states of

Sokoto ,Zamfara, Katsina  Kano and part of  Bauchi state.

Kawu explained that the union has been sensitizing its members on road traffic rules and the need to be orderly while on the road.

“We will find out where you come from and where you are staying in town before registering you and we have been advising our members to ensure that they know the destination of the passenger before they carry them”.

“They are mostly from part of Sokoto, Kano, and  Bauchi and we have told them to avoid  crowding in one place in case of any incidence,” he said.

He added that members of the union have also been advised to always drop passengers in areas where there are people to avoid cases motorcycle snatching or murder.

“We have told them to always ensure that they drop passengers where

they are people to avoid cases of theft and killings”

People of Lafia and environs have been expressing serious worry in the last few weeks over influx of Okada in the town due to security reasons.

 Blueprint observed that most of the Okada riders hardly knew the destination of their passenger which often results in cases of theft of motorcycles and other criminal activities.

 When contacted the state Police Public Relations officer PPRO Ismaila said the command is doing its best to protect the  lives and properties of individuals and organization.
