Resolving insecurity without state police herculean task – Uba Sani

The Kaduna state governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Uba Sani, has said “Nigeria is highly under-policed with three million operatives’ deficit, thus it’s imperative for state police to be allowed to augment the deficit.”

He said this at an interactive session with the Nigeria Labour Congress Kaduna state Council Political Committee on Friday.

Sani, a member of the Senate Constitution Amendment Committee, said with state police, security agencies “will effectively secure the lives and properties of citizens and address the spate of insecurity affecting parts of the country.”

“National Assembly started an amendment of the constitution including moving the minimum wage from exclusive list to concurrent list. We have done that and transmitted our position to the state governors. At the Conference Committee meeting a bid of state police was discussed but the bill did not scale through, which may affect other aspects of the amended constitution.

“We can’t solve insecurity in Nigeria unless we agree on state police. We need three million police in this country to effectively Police the country that is what happens globally. The requirement to join the state police is the same for Federal police,” he said.

Responding to the labour members request for job security and workers welfare, he said the best way to assure workers of their job security was to have one of them as an adviser.

“The only way to go about job security is to have one of you as an adviser so that we can sit down together and find solutions to the challenges facing workers.

“Lots of health workers are leaving the country and many of them in the Diaspora are willing to return back to the country once the enabling environment has been provided. We will look at workers migration from the state with the Governor Malam Nasir el-Rufa’i to see how we can resolve the issue.”
