Niger state youths under the auspices of Youth Lead Nigeria Movement have given AEDC and GenCos a one-month ultimatum to restore steady electricity supply or quit the state.
The youth, in a press conference addressed by their leader, Comrade Mohammed Saidu Etsu, said they were ready to occupy the GenCos “if nothing is done within four weeks.”
“We ready to occupy the GenCos at the expiration of this notice. We have exhausted all peaceful negotiations on this problem of darkness in the state and it time for action,” he said.
Etsu said the youth had been patient over the years, while enduring perpetual darkness despite the presence of three hydro electric dams in the state
“We call on stakeholders to hasten the payment of N13 billion grant rent accruing to the communities as revenue to the state government. We also call on the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, ensure the take-off of the Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC).
He decried the pathetic power supply in the state, adding that the activities of the dams had caused serious environment danger to host communities.
Etsu noted that the problem had degenerated over a period of time without any action from the AEDC and the government of the day, adding that “we can no longer tolerate the harsh and pretend that all is well.”
