Restriction order: Niger sends 204 violators to jail


Mobile courts in Niger state have convicted 204 persons to six months in prison for violation of the restriction order by the state government in a bid to curtail the spread of Covid-19 in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed this in Minna on Thursday.
He said the convicts were charged for offences ranging from driving vehicles during the period of lockdown, organising social events/gathering, lack of wearing face mask, conveying passengers during lockdown and carrying more than the prescribed numbers of passengers required during window period. 


He said, “The command arrested 216 persons and charged them to court, out of which 204 persons were convicted and awarded punishment ranging from Six months imprisonment.”
He said however, motorcyclist and tricyclists were given the option of fine of N3000 and N5000 respectively, adding that 12 persons were discharged.
The PPRO quoted the state Commissioner of Police, Adamu Usman, as imploring members of the public, and residents of Minna to continue to be law abiding citizens and ensure further compliance in the interest of public safety.


He urged them to see the measure as a means to curb the spread of COVID-19 and to protect life and property in the state.
