Rights group asks INEC to stop using academics in elections

A pro-democracy group, Human Right Liberty Access and Defenders Foundation (HURIJE), has expressed dissatisfaction over the use of academics in conducting elections in the country.

HURIJE, which decried the compromising disposition by some of them in the 2019 general election, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stop using them in future polls.

According to Chairman of the body, Dede Uzor A Uzor, “INEC should stop using the so-called professors and seek for people of intergrity in other spheres of life including rights activists, if they are sincere to improve our electoral system.

“Their compromise poses a lot of danger to the advancement of electoral process in Nigeria. They have not only dissapointed Nigerians but helped to further bastardise the county’s electoral system.”

He also alleged that the last election shown that academics were not above board, and appealed for the electoral umpire to go for professionals, technocrats, activists with integrity to help them manage elections.
