River basin to train Unilorin students on underground water monitoring

The Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority has indicated interest to partner the University of Ilorin in the area of students training on hydrographic survey and other methods of data collation and analysis on water

The Managing Director of the Authority, Dr Adeniyi Saheed Aremu, disclosed this at the Dam site of the University of Ilorin during the practical demonstration of the Advance  unmanned surface vessel called ‘APACHE 5’ that was just purchased by the Lower Niger River Basin Development authority.

Aremu said APACHE 5 is one of the latest equipment for ground water monitoring such as hydrographic survey, Dam monitoring, Dam construction, Bathymetric and other water related methods of data collation in the water.

He said, “We intend to partner with the University of Ilorin, especially with related Departments such as Survey and Geoinformatics, Geophysics, Water Resource and Environmental Engineering, National Center for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED), and many other Departments that want to do anything on ground water monitoring and survey”

Aremu explained that the idea of the collaboration was borne out of the Authority’s frantic efforts to train professionals and students to have first-hand knowledge of the latest equipment so as to place them side by side with their contemporaries across the globe.

In his comment, Mr. Adebayo Ibitoye Thomas of the National Center for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED) said that the equipment is very useful as it incorporates all traditional methods in survey studies, describing it as one of the best systems for environmental study.

In her remarks, Mrs Adio Yusuf of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, University of Ilorin, said that the equipment would be useful and supportive to the students in Departments like Survey, Water Resources and in most aspects of Engineering.

Earlier in his address, Architect Garba Umar of Slopes International Limited, the suppliers of the equipment, explained that APACHE 5 is a CHCNAV revolutionary USV solution with integrated single or multi- bean echo sounder that collects and stores data from multiple sensors in real time.
