Robbers kill 4 traders, POS operator in Edo

Suspected armed robbers, Friday, shot dead four traders at the popular new Benin market in Oredo local government area of Edo dtate. 

Four other persons were also said to have sustained varyiny degrees of injuries during the incident. 

This was just as another set of robbers reportedly raided a Point of Sales (POS) kiosk and thereafter killed the female operator. 

The incident added to the worsening security situation in the state since the defunct #EndSARS violent protest against police brutality. 

Two correctional centres and about seven police station were burnt during the protest. 

At the new Benin market, the hoodlums were said to have raided several shops and also shot sporadically to scare people away. 

A commercial bus driver simply identified as Osaro who claimed to have witnessed the incident said,  “There was confusion as people scampered for safety.”

According to the witness, four male traders who were running away from their shops on sighting the robbers were shot at close range.

Blueprint however, gathered that policemen from the new Benin police Division later took the body of the  traders away.

On the POS robbery, the incident occurred at Godwin Abbey Way, off Sapele road in Benin City.

The armed men reportedly stormed the shop  at about 12:50pm, and went straight to the female operator who was said to be in her early 20s.

A witness who craved for annonimity said, “The gunmen after collecting her money, mobile phones and other personal items still shot the young girl dead on the spot.”

The state police spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, could not be reached for comment. 

Policemen from the Rapid Response Squad it was gathered, has launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers as at the time of filing this story.
