Economic activities in Makurdi, Benue state capital, were yesterday paralysed in the wake of a speculated planned mega protest on the incessant Fulani invasion of the state.
Many markets within the state capital experienced low turn-up as at the time our correspondent went round as early as 7am-9am to monitor the development.
This is even as police authorities in Makurdi initially dispelled rumors of any planned rally.
Last Sunday, words had gone round the state of a planned mother of all protests by different groups including market associations and cooperatives.
But speaking with our correspondent on phone, police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ezeala, said no group has any authority to embark on any protest, maintaining that the police are fully mobilized to stop any group from doing so.
He advised residents to go about their normal businesses, warning that anyone caught will be dealt with ruthlessly.
It was observed that, heavily armed, fierce looking mobile police officers were seen in strategic areas in the town and some suspected flash points including, Wurukum roundabout, Modern Market Road, Old and New bridge roads while Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) where stationed while vehicles blaring sirens were seen patrolling the streets of the state capital.
Meanwhile, most public and private secondary schools were closed down and shops around Wadata and high level areas did not open for business. All the existing markets in town opened to buyers.
