SBGV violates human rights – NHRC

The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has said Sexual Based Gender Violence (SBGV) was a great violation of human rights.

This was contained in a statement issued Friday in Abuja by the Commission’s executive secretary, Tony Ojukwu.

According to the statement, the Commission has set up a panel to investigate SBGV across the six political zones in the country.

It read in part, “Every time December provides us an opportunity as individuals, institutions and as a people to renew our commitment to upholding the fundamental human right. There is no doubt that Nigeria as a nation has made reasonable progress even as there is still considerable room for improvement.

“The provision of the 1999 Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria as amended can make provision and have positive impact in the provision and protection of human rights in Nigeria. On this note let me reassure the commitment of the Commission as an apex human rights institution in the country to provide expected leadership and platform for bye-laws, positive direction and agenda setting in the realisation of human rights of Nigerians and non-Nigerians present in Nigeria.

“It is our contract with the people and government of Nigeria that we shall not relent. As we celebrate the 2020 national human right day, the commission enjoys all stakeholders to join the rest of the world in doing the following; we must end the discrimination of any height, we must end structural discrimination, nepotism, ethnicity, hatred and intolerance which have fuelled the Covid-19 crisis.

“We are all in this together, from individuals to government, from civil society and the grassroots communities to the private sector. Every one has a role in building post-Covid-19 walls that are better for the present and future generations. There is a need to ensure the voices of the most affected, the youth and the vulnerable that they inform in the recovery effort.”
