Scores injured, one dead as Train veers off track in Lagos

Residents of Lagos state came as usual went about their businesses on Thursday but along the line in the early hours tragedy struck following the death of one person while many others were injured after two train coaches reportedly veered its track Mangoro-Agege axis.

The Railway District Manager for Lagos district, Engr. Jerry Oche confirmed the death.

The incident happened at about 7:15 am when a train moving enroute Ebute-Metta via Oshodi from Iju with full capacity passengers derailed from its tracks.

Further investigation revealed that the train derailed as a result of faulty tracks at the level crossing.

It was learnt that the faulty tracks were to be repaired tonight following concern raised by the officials of the state Transport Management Authority (LASTMA).

Eyewitnesses say those wounded have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical first aid.

The state Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Paramedics, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police LASAMBUS, FRSC, RRS, LASTMA and Nigeria Police were on ground to manage the incident.
