Security lapses in NASS as burglary increases

Indications of serious security lapses within the premises of the National Assembly have emerged with increase in the rate of burglary in offices of lawmakers at both the Senate and House of Representatives.

Report indicates that on Wednesday this week, the offices of Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC Lagos Central) and Hon Muhammed Gausu Boyi representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency from Jigawa state, were burgled with valuable items carted away.

  Tinubu, in a statement issued to that effect by her legislative

aide, Nifemi Aje, disclosed that an HP laptop, Smile internet device, copies of Laws of the Federation, machine box attached to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) etc, were stolen by the yet to be identified Thieves/ Similarly, Hon Boyi in a letter of notification addressed to the Sergeant at Arms, Brig-Gen Mohammed Sani (retd), reported that his office was emptied by the thieves.

According to him in the letter dated 10th January, 2019, items missing from his office after the burglary were two Samsung Plasma Television  sets, two HP photocopy machines, one water dispenser, one Samsung refrigerator and a printer machine.

The lawmaker explained in the letter that his office Assistant, Abba Yusuf, discovered the incidence in the early hours of Thursday, January 10, 2019 when he reported for work.

He added in the letter that a similar report has also been lodged to the office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) NASS.

Tinubu in her own statement also disclosed that a report of the theft has been lodged at the National Assembly Police Post for appropriate investigation.

She added that traces of footsteps of the thieves were discovered on the office rug even as the wall cabinet was scattered.

A similar report was also made by Hon Muazu Lawal (APC Zamfara) whose office was burgled  in December last year.

Sambo, said reports to that effects have been received by him and investigations into the acts were going on.

The Sergeant-At-Arms on his own part refused to entertain questions on the rising wave of burglary in NASS, saying he was not in position to speak to the press over the matter as he directed all inquiries to the Office of the director, Information who was however, not around yesterday.
