Senate invasion: Nigeria descending to anarchy – LP

Labour Party (LP) has stated that the invasion of the Senate by thugs portends danger for the nation’s nascent democracy. This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by the party’s National Chairman, Dr Mike Omotosho.

It stated that the “act portends serious threat to democracy,” but urged the federal lawmakers to “remain resolute in the discharge of their legislative duties for the betterment of all Nigerians.”

The statement read in part: “The Labour Party (LP) wishes to register its displeasure and apprehension over the recent invasion of the Nigerian Senate by a group of hoodlums apparently sponsored from high places to desecrate the hallow chambers of the upper legislature by carting away the mace, the Senate’s symbol of authority during a plenary.

“This glaring sacrilege is replete with danger because the inability or failure of the large number of security personnel within the National Assembly complex to arrest the hoodlums and the manner in which the thugs escaped from the complex suggest that unseen hands were behind this ugly incident. “If a group of thugs allegedly led by a suspended member of the Senate can plot this heinous rape on democracy and are not apprehended, it portends a far more serious threat to democracy because if the legislature, the representatives of the people is cowed into submission, then dictatorship is imminent.”

Continuing, it read: “We denounce this act in its entirety and demand a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the brazen attack on the Senate. “We also wish to admonish the lawmakers in the National Assembly to remain resolute and fearless in the discharge of their legislative duties to the Nigerian people even in the face of this apparent tyranny
