Senate President assures support for revised gender Bill

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has assured of his support and commitment to advancing women’s rights and full participation in governance, saying they make up half of Nigeria’s population and shouldn’t be denied the opportunity to serve in government at all levels.
Lawan stated this in Abuja while receiving a high level advocacy team who paid his office a courtesy visit to seek his support as co-sponsor of the revised Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill (GEOBILL) .

The team presented the revised GEOBill which has adopted recommendations that addressed initial objections.
The GEOBill was revised by a Technical Working Committee established under the auspices of the office of Senator Abiodun Olujimi and UN Women and chaired by Saudatu Mahdi.
The Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill was initially sponsored by Senator Abiodun Olujimi in 2015.

The advocacy visit included Dame Pauline Tallen Minister of Women Affairs represented by Dr. Asabe V.
