The Senate has urged Nigerians in the spirit of Democracy Day celebrations to unite in the prosecution of the war against terrorism and agents of instability and stand more resolved in one united and indivisible Nigeria under God.

The senate while congratulating President Goodluck Jonathan all former Presidents and Heads of States, the legislature, the executive, judiciary and all Nigerians, also paid tribute to the armed forces and all patriots who are pillars of the country’s democracy.
In a motion sponsored by the Senate leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and considered yesterday on the floor to mark the Democracy Day anniversary, the Senate expressed satisfaction that the nation’s bastion of democracy, the National Assembly, was steadily canalising its practice and procedures in line with international best practices.

Contributing to the motion, Senator Smart Adeyemi who called for the restructuring of the country and more states stated that Democracy still remained the best form of government irrespective of the challenges the country is facing.
He also commended the role played by the media, Chief MKO Abiola and General Abdulsalam Abubakar in entrenching democracy in the country.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, David Mark, lauded the gains of the country’s democratic dispensation and called on government not to relent in finding solutions to problems confronting the nation.
He said: “What we have gained most in the current dispensation in the last 15 years is the freedom for us to speak freely. Today, we can discuss our problems and if we can identify and discuss the problem half of the problem is solved.”
