Senate wants Adamu Ciroma immortalized

The Senate yesterday asked the federal government to immortalise the late former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN), Malam Adamu Ciroma by naming a national monument after him.
The Senate resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Mohammed Hassan (PDP, Yobe South) in which he formally informed his colleagues of the passing away of Ciroma on Thursday, July 5 in Abuja.
Hassan, while leading debate on the motion, noted that the Fika-born politician served the nation meritoriously in various capacities, including pioneer Editor and Managing Director of New Nigerian Newspapers, Governor of CBN, Minister of Industry, Agriculture and Finance, respectively.
According to him, Ciroma will be fondly remembered as a seasoned journalist, astute administrator, daring politician “and one of the leading Nigerian elder statesmen who always took strong emulative positions on national issues.” He said the deceased led “a rare and excellent exemplary life style of contentment and gratitude and will surely be missed”, adding that “this great Nigerian will be remembered for his roles in ensuring the stability and growth of our nation.” The lawmaker recalled that the new military government of Murtala Mohammed appointed Ciroma as the CBN Governor in 1973, informing that that “it was uncommon knowledge that his tenure was considered outstanding in the banking industry.” “It was during his time in the CBN that discerning minds began to rate him as a possible future leader of the country,” he stressed.
Senator Hassan further noted that the late Ciroma was one of the leaders and a member of G34 who fought the military regime of late General Sani Abacha.
He added that the deceased was also a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, which was at the helms of affairs in the country between 1999 and 2015.
Seconding the motion, Senator Abdullahi Adamu (APC, Nasarawa West) recalled his political interactions with the deceased, especially in the 4th Republic and described him as a patriotic Nigerian.
