Senator condemns destruction of campaign billboards

The Akwa Ubokabasi Campaign Organisation has condemned the sustained destruction of the campaign billboards Senator Bassey Albert Akpan by his political opponents.
The Senator, who currently represents the Akwa Ibom North East senatorial district, cried out the opposition has resorted to destroying his billboards along Airport Roads, Water Fountain Roundabout by Nwaniba/Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road and other parts of the capital city.

The organization has expressed concerns over the development stating that its principal, Senator Akpan, has been devoting his time, energy and resources in meeting constituents and the electorate campaigning for votes in the 94 wards of the nine local government areas of Uyo senatorial district.

In a statement issued yesterday by the Director General, Elder Imoh Okon, the group noted that, “such acts of vandalism which is very strange in the politics of Akwa Ibom North East, is totally unwarranted, barbaric, callous, and is antithetical to sound democratic norms.

“It is therefore pertinent to state that the destruction of the billboards is an act of political cowardice and apparent helplessness by political opponents who have sensed their impending defeat and the obvious victory and re-election of the Distinguished Senator Bassey Albert Akpan during the forthcoming senatorial polls.
“We, therefore, call on the Nigeria Police Force, the State Security Service and other security agencies to rise to the occasion by bringing to book the perpetrators of this ignoble act in order to save as a deterrent to others.”
The organization noted that the only way to ensure that politics is not played as a do or die affairs is when there is strict observance of the do’s and don’ts as stipulated by the law.

They urged security agencies to remain completely impartial in order to discourage politicians who, rather than engaging in the legitimate process of campaigning for votes, boast of using federal might in the forthcoming elections.
While expressing confidence on the result of the senatorial re-election of Senator Akpan, they stated that, “this, however, cannot stand, as the electorates, through their votes, will decide who they want”.
