Serving president’s death: JIBWIS seeks constitution amendment

Shekih Sani Yahaya Jingir, has said Nigerians should be allowed to get back to polls for a rerun election should any sitting President dies.
The cleric, who is also the National Chairman Council of Ulama’a Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), urged that sections of the constitution necessary in this regard be amended.
The Cleric, who made the statements in Jos the Plateau State Capital, said from the onset Nigerians were voting in the President but not the Vice President, saying the system should be corrected.
“One old system that is seeking for correction is the voting into office of President and vice President, a situation where if the voted President die, the system will say swear-in the vice President, but we did not voted for the vice President,”he added.
“If the President die another election should held, and if the vice President wants to be President he should also contest to be voted as President.” He said there is the fears of having a bad vice President that might conspired with others to harm the President so that he can die, and the vice to automatically becomes the President.
“But he knows that election must be held before he becomes the President, he wouldn’t continue with his ill plans,” Jingir added.
The cleric further encouraged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to streghthen its uses of card readers and other genuine means of ensuring more credible, free and fair elections in the Country.
According to the cleric the; “used of card reader in the previous elections have blocked elections rigging, the electoral umpire should strengthen its uses, so that the People’s will can always be allowed to stay.” Shikeh Jingir said political parties should discard the systems of rotation on which side will field candidates in an election.
“Nigerians should be allowed to vote for candidates of their choices, based on merit, credibility and tested popularity but not on the basis of rotation or zoning system as is being done by political parties,” he said.
