Shelved strike: Remian calm, NLC tells workers, citizens in Kaduna

Following the shelved strike and protest, the Kaduna state council of Nigeria Labour Union (NLC) has urged all its affiliates to follow latest directive of the national body and await next line of action from the National Working Committee.
The NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had scheduled Monday, September 28 for a nationwide rally to protest increases in the prices of petrol and electricity.
But, the unions suspended the strike and rally after a late night meeting with the federal government team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The labour leaders also resolved to review their decision in another two weeks to see if their agreement with the government is being complied with.
Addressing members of unions, who thronged the Medical and Healthy Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna state office, Kaduna NLC Chairman, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman, who relayed the official message to shelve the planned protest and strike, prevailed on Union members to obey the directive and decision.

“We have mobilised our members across the 23 local government areas to participate in planned protest and strike but we are left with no option than to obey the directive to shelve it. We have instruction from the national secretariat to suspend the planned twin actions; the strike and the peaceful protest.
“The message came to us this morning. You can attest to the fact that we are ready ,we are on ground and we have the capacity to mobilise Kaduna workers and masses for the protest. After negotiations between government and the labour unions at national level, the planned protest and strike was shelved .

“We gathered reliably that the congress has called for Central Working Committee meeting by 4pm today (Monday). I want to believe that the CWC will meet peruse the agreement and come with a resolution on the next line of action. As a state congress, we don’t have much to do than to abide by the instruction of the national secretariat and wait for the outcome of the CWC,” he said.

The NLC Chairman however, gave assurance of adequate representation if a meeting is called, while commending all the union members for their courage, solidarity and support.
