Plenary of the House of Representatives was on Tuesday, brought to an abrupt end over invasion of the National Assembly by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly called Shi’ite group.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who called for a motion for adjournment of the session said, “we have to attend to some security matters.
The group had staged repeated protests in Abuja over the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaki by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, in demand for his immediate release.
Members of the sect who were at the National Assembly last Thursday, were promised an intervention of the parliament, by Gbajabiamila, who was represented by the Majority Leader, Hon. Alhassan Doguwa.
They however returned on Tuesday with a daring and violent approach.
According to witnesses, the protesters were armed with assault riffles and even snatched police firearms in the wake of trying to stop them access into the National Assembly, after scaling the first (MOPOL) gate.
Several cars were smashed by members of the sect, and some others set ablaze, while policemen were fatally wounded in the fracas.
