Shipping charges : FG enjoins UASC to remove unfriendly policies

The federal government through the Executive Secretary /Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) Hassan Bello has charged Union African Shippers Council ( UASC) members to collectively work as a bloc to remove unfriendly policies or circumstances that the shipping companies relied upon for arbitrary increases of their charges.

At the ongoing one-day sub-regional summit on unfair shipping surcharges and high local shipping charges at the port of West and Central Africa Sub-region on Tuesday in Abuja , the Executive Secretary said some of the identified surcharges have been prevalent in the sub-region under various nomenclatures such as the Peak Season Surcharge and War risk surcharge to mention a few.

He said the NSC has been checkmating the shipping companies operating in Nigeria on every move to impose chargeswithout due consultation with relevant stakeholders in the port industry in Nigeria.

In his words “We have a pending case in court because we asked the shipping companies to revert to an agreed negotiated rates of some services, after they had unilaterally increased the charges.

“ We are not opposed to alternative dispute resolutionmechanisms to ensure that there is continuous cordial business relationship”.
