As part of measures to discover and nurture talents from their
formative age, Skygold Academy, Nyanya Gwandara, Karu local government area of Nasarawa state at the weekend held their first inter-house sport competition held at the Gwandara primary school open stadium.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of the Parent Teachers
Association (PTA) in the school, Baba Yusuf stated that the grassroots
competition was a necessary step towards producing world champion in
sports.
Yusuf was delighted that the competition had thrown up many talented
athletes adding that the school was poised to produce athlete that
would represent the country at the world level in the nearest future.
In his welcome address, the director of the academy, Mr. Ifeanyi
Okanazu said he was fascinated by the skills and discipline that the
children displayed as he watched them on the field.
“When you see kids at this tender age do this, they flourish because
they are disciplined from tender age and when you see these kids
beyond sports, you know that there is always hope for this country.
“Sports bring discipline and confidence and it going to grow with them
as they grow” he added.
On her own, the proprietress of the school, Mrs.
Ifeanyi Mabel thanked the parents for devoting their time and
resources into the development of the young athletes.
She said, “beyond what it would do for them at a personal in terms of
their development both mental and physical, these children are future
of this country because they will represent Nigeria not just at this
level but up to the Olympic level. We are catching them young
The proprietress also commended the house masters and said what was
being done with the children was in tandem with one of the major focus
of Skygold academy in the area of grassroots sport development.
“For every sport be it football, table tennis, relay race, boxing etc.
unless they start at this level, working with those talent, developing
them and taking them to trials and competitions, you cannot have what
you need. There is need for sport and education to go hand in hand” She concluded
