Society not fair to women, Enugu group laments

Women interest group, Nwanyibuife (a woman is something), has lamented the unfair treatment being meted out to women by the society, irrespective of the fact that women play important role in the society.

The group made the lamentation during the official unveiling of the group’s logo at the Roots Restaurant, Independence Layout, Enugu.

Speaking at the occasion, convener of the group, Mrs Chinemerem Ani, said though women have been crying out over the years to be given their fair share in the society, they are still being treated unfairly in every ramification, especially in the area of elective and political appointment.

Ani pointed out that in spite of the 35 per cent Affirmation Action reached at the Beijing Conference, women are hardly given up to 20 percent, not to talk of 35.

She lamented that civilisation has not redressed the imbalance in the society since women are still being treated as underdogs.

“The society is not fair to women irrespective of the noise women have been making, we are still where we are but we want to say here that women are something,” she said.

Ani said women have been playing vital roles in the society, yet they are hardly recognised by the men dominated society, pointing out that without women, the society will not be a place to live in.

“A woman is a success story. You don’t joke with women. A man builds a house but a woman makes a home,” she said.
