Sokoto to harness livestock potentials – Commissioner

The Sokoto state Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries,
Professor Abdulkadir Usman-Junaid, has said  the state government
is prepared to actively participate in the National Trade Fair to
showcase abundant livestock opportunities in the state.

Usman-Junaidn stated  this in an interview with newsmen in Sokoto
and noted that Sokoto possessed highly patronised species of Red Goats and Gudale cattle.

The commissioner revealed that artificial insemination for cattle with
imported breed had commenced in the state.

“Now most of our local breeds produces just about one to four litres
of milk per milking, the intention is to make sure that when we cross
breed with other breeds like the one we have brought in from South
Africa, we will be able to produce ten to thirty litres per milking.

He said the number of animal brought in from South Africa is not
adequate to go round  every farmer, but with artificial insemination,
more people could have the type of breed they want for better yield.

He said more attention and investment in veterinary medicine
and livestock business was made by the present administration.
