Travellers in Anambra State had hectic time, Thursday, trekking to different destinations as transporters embarked on strike action to protest the taxation imposed on them by the State government.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration had a month ago announced that tricycle (Keke) operators and Shuttle Bus drivers in the state would be paying N15,000 and N25.000 monthly.
As a result, Keke and Shuttle bus operators with their taskforce insisted they would not carry passengers on Thursday, as well as put obstructions along some strategic locations like Ziks Avenue, road leading to Eke Awka daily market.
They urged governor Soludo to review the tax downward, adding that they would not pay the two months of the approved revenue, which the state government had said were approved after series of consultations and meeting between members of the various transport unions and stakeholders.
Speaking to Blueprint, Mr Uche Ogwu, who was seen trekking to a commercial bank along Aroma junction, appealed to governor Soludo to consider the sufferings of people and poor wages of commuters and reverse the cost of the taxes.
“It took me one hour, thirty minutes to get to Aroma. I came out since morning but couldn’t get Keke or shuttle bus to convey me to my destination. I trekked from Kwata junction to Aroma. This is unfair. Our Mr Governor should think how to solve this,” he noted.
Also speaking, Mrs Ify Onusiaku, lamented that it took her one hour to trek to the State Ministry, where she works, due to scarcity of transporters to carry her.
