SON approves 213 new industrial standards

As the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) clocks 50 years, the Director General Malam Farouk Salim said parts of it giant strides is the approval of 213 new Nigeria industrial standards for stakeholders/industry use. 

This, the DG, said would support economic and ensure quality in products.

Salim, who disclosed this at a press briefing to mark SON’s 50th anniversary celebration Wednesday in Abuja, added that the Agency has gone through a lot of transformation and evolved to become a standards regulatory body of global recognition.

Other achievements, according to the DG was when the federal government introduced the first ever Nigerian National Standardisation Strategy (NNSS) 2020 – 2022 as part of its economic diversification policy. 

He said this strategy, which was developed by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), is designed to identify priority areas to focus on, based on national needs assessment.

He said “President Muhammadu Buhari has more than doubled the speed and drive for quality management and standardization in the country.

Other achievements are “ Re-equipping the national metrology institute, Enugu to protect Nigerian roads, promote fair trade, Calibration of weigh bridges nationwide on federal government’s directives, Allocation of landed properties by the governments of Katsina, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Kano, Cross Rivers and Ebonyi for the construction of prototype son regional/state/laboratory/ storage complex.

Others are Occupation of new SON Corporate headquarters building, Abuja and facelift of the older buildings, Relocation of SON state offices to more conducive and befitting accommodations in Jigawa, Kano, Sagamu, Relocation of state offices to SON permanent office/laboratory complexes In FCT, Kwara, Akwa Ibom And Ekiti states and others.
