SON seizes unfortified sugar in Yobe market

Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in Yobe state has recently invaded Geidam market in Yobe state where unfortified bags of sugar were seized in accordance with its mandate to ensure quality standardization of products and making sure the consumers get safe products for consumption.
This was disclosed by the state Coordinator, Dr.
Zainab Umar while briefing newsmen in her office in Damaturu.
“This effort was innate out of the directives given by the Director General, Anthony Osita Aboloma to sanitize Nigerian markets of sub-standard sugar and to stop the circulation and consumption of this unfortified sugar with high ICUMSA level by the consumers”.
“The seized products have been confirmed to be unfortified with vitamin A, which has violated the federal government policy and it is in contravention of the requirements of our standard regarding fortification of sugar with vitamin ‘A’ as specified in the NIS for the product which overtime can cause health hazard especially to women and children,” she added.
Blueprint gathered that the exercise was also carried out to encourage local industries and consumers to get value for their money and ensure purchase of products that are safe and fit for consumption.
The state Coordinator called on marketers to desist from importing sub-standard food products.
Consumers were also advised consumers to be vigilant by making sure that every product carries the SON symbols.
