Sowore: Aremu backs DSS

Contrary to widespread calls for release of the convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, renowned labour leader, Comrade Issa Aremu, has faulted the former presidential candidate for flouting the rule of law, noting that the law should take its course.

This was as deaf people in Kaduna state on Thursday appealed to government at all levels to employ sign language interpreters in all public institutions to ease their communication.

Addressing the 2019 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) organized by National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), the Union’s General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu said, the Textile Workers in collaboration with International Labour Organization (ILO) decided to celebrate with persons living with disabilities because there is ability in disability.
Aremu called on government to approve a special minimum wages for the IDPD, adding that government must respect the rules of law by obeying the various court orders for the release of people in detention.

He however clarified that on Sowore saga, obeying the rules of law is a two way traffic because it is not the government alone that should obey court order but the citizens also. He argued that, calling for immediate revolution is unacceptable because the only way to change a government is through democratic process.
“He contested election under a democracy government, now he is calling for forceful removal the same government. If he was not lucky in the last election he should wait for another time. I also contested in the election and was not successful but we are not going to call for revolution now because it is undemocratic. So he should obey the rules of law by doing what is acceptable in the law,” he said.

Addressing the same gathering in Kaduna, representative of the deaf people, Mohammed Abubakar, said, it is sadden to note that, deaf people step into hospital but communication becomes a barrier for those who can not write, saying it is more painful because they cannot explained their ailments.

He further said, “It is same scenario in other public institutions across the country, “even the media houses especially the television houses are not following the thread in international practices by having sign language interpreters during their news bulletins. This did not speak well of the country in the 21st century.”
