Network of Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (NOCSON) Tuesday condemned alleged invasion of Abuja court by the Department of State Security (DSS) and the subsequent re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, convener of “revolution now protest”.
NOCSON said the action of DSS was uncivilised and nothing short of inhumanity to man because according to them, “Sowore has been granted bail on several occasions by courts of competent jurisdiction.”
Secretary General of the group, Mr. Ogbidi Emmanuel, disclosed this during a public lecture to mark the “World Human Rights Day and Anti-Corruption 2019” held in Benin City, Edo State capital.
Emmanuel reminded the secret police and “all other law enforcement agencies that every citizen still reserves their rights until proven guilty by court of competent jurisdiction”.
He said the event tagged: “Stand up for Human Rights” is to “reawaken citizenry on the need to stand for their rights and demand from relevant authorities what is due them as a people.”
“Several happenings across the nation in Nigeria today has in no small measure negate the United Nations General Assembly declaration on human rights, of which we must all condemn in entirety,” the activists stated.
Continuing, Emmanuel also condemned the sudden emergence of the controversial social media bill at the National Assembly which according to him, it is “unpopular” targeted to rob Nigerians of their freedom of expression.
He cautioned the National Assembly against resurrecting “such anti-people bill or smuggle same through the back-door”.
