Sponsor youth on scholarship, not pilgrimage – Kuje chairman

By Donald Iorchir

The President, Rubochi Youth Association (RUYA) in Kuje area council, Comrade Joseph Iyakwo, has  urged the area council administration to focus more on sponsoring of students and welfare of orphans.
Speaking at the RUYA Day celebration and granting of scholarship to some of the students in Rubochi, he said the Council should concentrate on what would better the lives of its less privileged ones.

He said sponsoring of some persons to Jerusalem and Hajj pilgrimage should not be taken as a major priority, but emphasis should be focus on initiating programmes that would bring respite for the people, especially upgrading of primary health centers a across the communities.
The president said the association’s decision to assist some students through scholarship as well as the orphans was borne out of the desire to ensure that the orphans have the opportunity to compete with their mates, who are from well to do families.

He noted that since the area council had not awarded scholarships over the years, it become necessary for the association to assist the orphans so that they acquire education, and also contribute their quota to the development of the society.
According to him, since his assumption of office as president of RUYA over four years ago, the group has been paying school fees for secondary school students for all terms.

The president, advised the authorities of the council to suspend sponsoring some people to Jerusalem and Hajj pilgrimage, adding that the administration should concentrate more on paying of the students scholarships and upgrading of primary health centers.
“The primary health center here in Rubochi lack basic amenities, no tables, desks, generator even a fence, whatever is provided or install in these health centres may be taken away by hoodlums, he said.
The association also presented food items and clothing to some widows and less privileged in  the community as part of its social responsibility.
