The staff and patients of Nasarawa-Eggon General Hospital have complained that power outage in the hospital for the past three months is causing inconveniences including the disruption of operations.
They spoke during interactions with newsmen in Nasarawa-Eggon on Tuesday.
Acting Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr David Titus confirmed the situation, saying that since February, the hospital had been carrying out its activities powered by a generating set.
“The development came unannounced and for the past three months, we have not had light. We have been in total darkness. We have been incapacitated a great deal. It has affected us and other residents we share the same transformer with, ’’ he said.
Titus stated that hospital activities such as surgical operations, among others, were either delayed or abandoned due to the non-supply of electricity to the hospital.
He said the total blackout had adversely affected patients in the hospital, stating: “Though we have a stand by generator but when we have public light supply, it makes our work easier.
“Patients in the wards stay without light and the fans are not on to cool the weather. You can imagine what the patients go through. It’s another breeding opportunity for disease transmission. So, if the situation is taken care of as soon as possible, we will be so glad because right now, we are really incapacitated’’.
A patient, Hajiya Murjanatu Ibrahim, said patients were suffering in the general hospital due to non-supply of power.
She appealed to the state government and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to ensure a new transformer is installed to reduce the untold hardship facing both patients and the management of the hospital.
“I was admitted into the hospital many days ago but I can tell you that we are not comfortable at all. Patients are suffering due to the total blackout. I call on the government and other relevant stakeholders to come to our aid by replacing the old transformer,’’ Ibrahim said.
AEDC General Manager Corporate Communications Mr Oyebode Fadipe while reacting to the development said a new transformer had been approved and will be delivered on Tuesday to replace the disused one.
He said when a new electricity transformer is installed, the affected community will access electricity from the national grid. (NAN)
