State Police

But the question is, would prayers in such motions include the need to start the process of decentralising policing in the country in paving way for establishment of State Police as widely being suggested now as panacea to the problem by no less personalities like the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and even the State Governors through their Chairman, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State.

Creation of State Police was even one of the solutions arrived at during the national security summit organised by the Senate, January this year, as panacea against incessant killings in the land. Little wonder that in his reaction to the Plateau killings, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, declared that more and more such killings would still be carried out by merchant of blood until the constitutional needful is done by removing Policing from the Exclusive List to Concurrent List to pave way for State Police, whose men and officers would be indigenes of the state they are policing.

“This can be done within two or three months being a single item constitution amendment”, he said.
