Stop the media hostilities against Gov Bagudu – Group

A group under the auspices of Northern Nigerian Youth Council (NNYC) has berated a section of the media and other civil society groups for criticising the Kebbi state governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and circulating the falsehood that he stands to benefit a whopping sum from a cache of recovered Abacha loot.

In a statement, group’s Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Suleiman, said It has come to their notice that some newspapers and civil society groups are on a mudslinging mission to soil the good standing of Gov Bagudu, allegedly over a cache of recovered Abacha loot. “Nothing can be further from the truth. And, as the spokesperson to the Minister of Justice clarified, this fantastic story can only be a figment of the writer’s imagination.

Ordinarily, we will not be wasting time glorifying that travesty with a response. However, there are times when silence is not even worth the letters it is written with.
“This is why we have found it necessary to issue this statement and warn this online medium as well as other media houses that are in on this campaign of infamy to desist from spreading fake, sensational and baseless lies capable of heating the polity and causing disaffection among Nigerian.
“As a group, we will not allow the peddling of falsehood against the person of Gov Bagudu who has been a God sent to the people of Kebbi!

We therefore urge media houses to vet their stories properly before going to press. The media is supposed to be trusted, however, when outrageous stories such as this are allowed free passage through a gate supposed to be guarded by balance, responsibility, objectivity and facts, it leaves the rest of us with serious doubts because trust, is to be earned.”

The group added that, those really interested in the facts of the matter can approach the Attorney General’s office, as Gov Bagudu will prefer to be left alone to concentrate on delivering the dividends of democracy to his people who have been satisfied with his leadership style.
