Strike: Edo teachers defy court order, stay away from classrooms

Public primary school teachers in Edo state on Tuesday stayed away from work in continuation of the ongoing indefinite strike it began January 18, 2020.
A visit to Igbesanwan, Agbado, Ebenezer and Ogboe primary schools in the Benin metropolis showed that academic activities have been paralysed.

The teachers are at loggerheads with the state government over unpaid entitlements and other sundry issues.
The National Industrial Court sitting in Benin City had on Monday restrained the teachers from embarking on strike.

The suit marked:  NICN/BEN/04/2021 was instituted against the teachers by  Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)  with Suit No. NICN/BEN/04/2021,
However, the state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), said it had not been served with any processes or documents of court injunction against the ongoing strike action.

The Assistant  Secretary General of the union, Comrade Modesty Itua, said, “as long as the union is concerned, the indefinite strike action is still in force. The strike action continues indefinitely,”
