Strike: No retreat, no surrender – ASUU declares

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Benin Branch has denied insinuations that it backed out of the ongoing ASUU strike

The Chairman of ASUU in Uniben, Ray N. Chikogu in a statement urged the general public to disregard “the laughable piece of deliberate misinformation”.

Chikogu said:  “ASUU UNIBEN is irrevocably committed to executing the current strike to its logical conclusion, until such a time that the National Executive Council (NEC) of our Union deems it fit to direct otherwise.

“The Branch is more than aware that the intelligentia have a moral obligation to rescue public tertiary education from the grip of retrogressive forces in the corridors of power who insist on imposing forced labour, paying slave wages”.

The statement further adds that,  “ASUU UNIBEN is convinced that these forces need to be checked for the sake of posterity, and that the time is now. For us, it is “no retreat, no surrender!

“We have no doubts whatsoever that the verdict of history will be on the side of ASUU.”

The National leadership of ASUU declared industrial action on February 14, 2022 in protest of the Earned allowance for members amongst others as contained in 2009 agreement with the Federal government.

Similarly, the management of University of Benin has debunked speculations that it has called back students to resume on 4th September, 2022.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the institution, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire said: “although desirous of a return to normalcy, the University is not in a position to arbitrarily direct resumption by students”.
